For the first time in the long recorded history of smoking, there is an alternative to tobacco  No longer is the smoker restricted to the choice of a tobacco product. From proposed bans based on inconclusive or incomplete data in Utah to unfair and biased attacks claiming that e-cigarettes are aimed at children, the popular thing to do seems to be to bury the e-cig revolution before it has a chance to take root.

The owner of two Shisha cafes in Manchester has been fined over £1500 and ordered to pay a further £1200 in costs after illegal Shisha pipe smoking was found to be occurring on the premises. Councillors in Manchester have condemned the café owner, especially as he had previously been warned about allowing smoking in his restaurant. It is hoped that the fine will act as a deterrent to other bars and restaurants allowing Shisha smoking to take place illegally.

Since the smoking ban came into force in England in 2007, smoking indoors in public areas has been illegal. Shisha bars can allow smoking within the law, but this can only take place in areas where there are three sides of the area open for ventilation. As the number of Shisha bars has increased in towns and cities across the country, there have been growing concerns that not all of the bars are operating within the law and allowing smoking of Shisha pipes in areas where there is little or no ventilation. Police and environmental officers in Manchester have been cracking down on illegal Shisha smoking over the past few months, also fining another café owner on the grounds of similar offences.

In addition to concerns over the legality involved with smoking Shisha pipes, there are concerns from health campaigners that the dangers of smoking tobacco via Shisha pipes are not properly promoted by Shisha bar owners and as such, people are unknowingly putting themselves at risk. “People may think that smoking Shisha is not as harmful as cigarettes, but all the evidence says this is not the case”, commented Councillor Nigel Murphy.

That’s what the TVECA stated about electronic cigarettes a few weeks ago. But if you read it, and you’re like me, you probably thought: When’s something going to go wrong? Surely it’s only a matter of time! I mean, how can you use something, no matter how safe, a billion times without someone getting hurt [...]

This will be of importance to you if you’ve tried a flavour you thought was nice, but the reality was far from that, and now the persistent little flavour won’t take the hint and leave!

Several methods of cleaning are commonly used – blowing through the atomizers, dripping pure VG through it, soaking them in very hot (boiled) water, or soaking them in cola, (we all know how cola can clean a coin, so it can work with your atomizer too.)

 

But what if you have tried all that and you can still taste it?

 

Our very own TonyF once tried some menthol, and then tried to get rid of the taste with roast chicken e-liquid. I know- go figure eh? Probably one too many of the red wine and he ended up with smooth menthol chicken flavour.

One word for that – Gross. He should have tried this method as suggested by someone on the TW forum.

Disclaimer – you are responsible for your vaping, this is a suggestion only, and please do your own research!

Isopropanol is a solvent that can get rid of unwanted strong flavours in your atomizer, and it dissolves any oily residues that have built up.

To get rid of the offending e-liquid, first soak the atomizer in very hot water, and while the atomizer is still hot, (you will need tongs/pliers to hold the atty with) drip a few drops of the isopropanol from the battery end through the atomizer.

Leave the atty overnight – as you want any remaining isopropanol to evaporate

What do I need to get started?

Two of the largest Health Boards in Wales have enforced a rule which will see smoking anywhere on their NHS hospital premises banned. Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board in North Wales and Aneurin Bevan Health Board in southeast Wales brought in the smoking ban on 1st January 2012. Smoking is now not just banned inside hospital buildings, but throughout NHS property and land within their health board properties.

The ban comes into force following a recent tobacco action control plan report by the Welsh Government, which suggested the indoor smoking bans which already exist in hospitals, health centres and schools should be extended to cover their grounds as a whole.

Smoke detectors have been installed in hospital building entrances and loudspeaker alarms will be activated when smoke is detected. Staff, patients and visitors who wish to smoke will now need to leave the hospital premises to do so – as smoking outside entrances and in car parks is no longer permitted.

Dr Gill Richardson of Aneurin Bevan Health Board said “A smoke-free environment policy will protect staff, patients and visitors from the proven harm caused by second-hand smoking.

“Hospitals should be places of healing. If patients smoke whilst in hospital, this increases the risk of complications and delays their recovery”.

Bans on smoking on hospital properties are already in force in some hospitals in South Wales and further hospitals in Newport and Abergavenny are also set to follow suit in the first few months of the year.

Did you know that your willpower is like a muscle? It needs feeding, resting, it mustn’t supress its emotions and it needs a good workout.

 

If you have been struggling with say switching to e-cigs, or lowering the nicotine strength of your e-juice,  but for some reason things aren’t going so well, don’t be hard on yourself and try out the following tactics.

 

Take a break! (You can have a KitKat while you are at it too.) If you have been working hard, making decisions and concentrating, you are actually using up your willpower at the same time.

Running low on calories? Then eat – your willpower dips along with your blood sugar.  Another interesting find is that if you have been supressing your emotions-   trying to stay ‘in control’, that eats up your willpower too.

Take this example: You have been working hard making vital decisions, while trying not let onto the boss that you think he is a total moron, and you had to skip to lunch – guess what – when you get home your willpower to not have a cigarette will be so depleted, it is almost inevitable that you will reach for the cigarettes instead of the e-cig.

 

Friends and support is also vital to your willpower (he’s a sociable guy!), as is only changing ONE habit at a time. Trying to switch to e-cigs, give up the daily glass of wine and go to the gym? Forget it, choose one thing and concentrate on that. Too many and the willpower muscle crawls under a rock and hides.

And a little every day is what builds it up, even 20 minutes is enough.

So now you know what to do, relax, eat, have a laugh, get the support of your friends and do one thing at a time, and go for it – as you’ll have the willpower to succeed.

Amid Proposed Bans and Tax Hikes on E-Cigs, South Carolina Town Leads the Way With Rational Thinking

Charlotte, NC – February 9, 2012 – This week, the North Myrtle Beach City Council in South Carolina passed the second and final reading of a new ordinance to regulate smoking within city limits, effective March 7. Noticeably absent from the ordinance were electronic cigarettes, which were expressly removed by council members before the vote. As public officials and lawmakers across the country continue to push for bans and tax hikes on e-cigarettes, blu Cigs commends the North Myrtle Beach council for its decision and for doing its own due diligence, and not letting misinformed public opinion or political posturing influence a rash choice.
